Barnaby is clearly mostly to blame. Many months of running training followed. This was unfortunately matched by an equally large amount of inactivity, overeating and ageing, followed by a fair number of character assassinations, denigrations and general despair. I was worried for a while that I might have to pull out at the last minute, having stood on a wasp nest in Northland on Wednesday and being stung 8 times. However, Dr Luff prescribed me double the maximum allowed dose of antihistamine and the swelling in my legs had mostly subsided by race day. (Whew!) So (somehow) Michal, Nev, Barnaby, Will and I were all lacking good excuses and we flew down to Queenstown on Friday afternoon....

Auckland Trail Hunua 2025 (aka XTerra) 29 June 2025 21.6km, 917m, 2:25:55 https://www.strava.com/activities/14947348945/overview https://my.raceresult.com/346801/results Race Day Ed picked up Me, Barnaby and Juliette, and we met up with Michal, Maria K and Catherine D out there and later the rest of the Petri and RLC crowd. The day was overcast and grey, but not windy or cold. There had been heaps of heavy rain on Thursday/Friday, and so I expected the trails (and carpark) to be super muddy and wet. As it turned out, although there was a bit of water around, neither the parking nor the trails were a complete bog-fest, and I armed myself with my trusty Salomon SpeedCross and prepared for an all-in big effort! Race We started 10 minutes late (due to zealous KDB cleansing requirements), with Michal (predictably!) sprinting off ahead with Juliette at the gun. Auckland Trail Shakespear Park 2025

Auckland Trail Shakespear Park 2025 (aka XTerra) 8 June 2025 19.3km, 386m, 1:46:51 https://www.strava.com/activities/14728385771/overview Race Day I picked up Will, Barnaby (yes, truely!!), Juliette, Nev, Jack and Michal to make a full carload. It was a beautiful clear cool morning after recent rain. Perfect! The racing was eagerly anticipated, especially with the return of Barnaby's pilates-infused body, and Will's potential showdown with Juliette. Also, would Neville get revenge for last race's theft by Michal? Shakespear has the tricky rocky beach section after about 2km. We were all semi-close together as we entered the rocks, but everyone pretty much zoomed away from me quickly, as I tried to avoid breaking my ankles. But I felt very stable and secure in my new Speedcross shoes, and never really came close to slipping over. I reckon that I gained some confidence and speed over time (survivor bias effect...).
