Race Day
I chatted to Glenn and Malcolm at the event, as well as Ben Rickerby (ACA) who won the under 20s race. The weather was ridiculously sunny and windless, so I ran in just the ACA singlet, without gloves or beanie. This was perfect.
Everyone started together at 10:15am.
I felt good for the run, and put in an honest effort, whilst being conscious of not going too hard early and dying later on. There were a few steep sections, but nothing that was unrunnable. The out and back section at the 60% mark was nice since it was flattish, and also I could clearly see my competitors by this point. There was a guy well ahead of me (Dave Kettles who won the 50+ by 90 seconds), and Glenn was about a minute back, so I was pretty sure that my second place wasn't going to change. This knowledge allowed me to relax and just focus on running hard and enjoying the view.
The run was mostly up a gravel road - not technical or muddy.
The view from the top was spectacular, and we were fortunate with the weather since the support vehicle with the gear bags was slow to arrive.
At prizegiving I won a t-shirt (which I donated to Steve since it fitted him better)
Queenstown
I had an awesome weekend - running on Saturday and skiing with Steve and Ben on Sunday :)
