The Run
I wasn't intending to run this Athletics NZ event. I spent the previous week in Queenstown - skiing a little but not running much. Brett decided to enter it, and since Daniel's soccer was cancelled, I snuck the chance to do an on-the-day late entry.
Brett drove us out. The day was ok - warm enough but with the odd passing shower. The grass was pretty waterlogged from previous rain, and got pretty squelchy. Hills pretty much non-existent.
I wasn't feeling 100% (I had a cold), so I tried to reign myself back and run conservatively. In the end, this probably contributed to an appropriate race pace (which I couldn't have improved anyway in my not-well state). The course was 8km (4 laps).
I ran about 100m behind two ACA guys for most of the race, and only managed to move up to overtake them in the last 300 meters. This was great, since I pushed myself into second place in the 50..54 age group by beating one of them. :)
So, I came 2nd in 50..54 :) Greatly surprised to see the results afterwards.
Brett came 3rd in 60..64, which he also was very pleased with.
Post-Run
I was really tired afterwards, and somewhat ill. At least I went into the race fully tapered (even if by accident, really)!
Squash later on Saturday and then an XTerra the next day didn't help!! Good times.
