Oh no! Dread plus++. The Hunua run!
What would we get this year? More hail? More cars stuck in the mud? More course changes?
In the end... no, none of those, just a solid couple of hours toiling up and down the hills.
Neville and I headed out on Sunday morning. Neville managed to remember about half of his compulsory equipment (in spite of my reminder the night before). [[He had to promise to wear socks on his hands in the event of needing gloves...]] !
The day was neither hot, nor cold, nor wet nor dry, but somehow managed to combine a lack of all weather conditions. So the trails were quite dry and not unduly slippery. (Although it did start drizzling when we were finishing our run)
We started the run with a rocketing 4.01 minute kilometer, before steadying down and rollicking through the 10km of singletrack trails, complete with a couple of easy stream crossings.
Hey, whose photo is this, anyway?
Ok, this is your photo...
At about this stage, I could hear Nev (stuck on my tail) was puffing hard, so I kept the speed on, and started to pull away from him. (He admittedly was not in super condition today).
The serious hill climbing started. This first section saw us gain over 250m in one cruel stretch of gravel road. This section used to be on trail, but Kauri die-back problems have moved it to the road.
Eventually we got up to the start of the PukaPuka track, and the real fun started!
The PukaPuka is only about 6km long, but it seems to go on forever. I love the muddy, rooty trails that have very few flat sections :) It took nearly 60 minutes for those 6km...
Eventually we popped out onto the gravel downhill road, and it was a quick quad-smashing few kilometers down and across the dam and around to the finish.
2:23 for me today, which was a decent improvement on last year. Yeehah! :)
Nev came through in 2:37 and Pauline in a bit over 3 hours. (her transponder fell off!)
