The Shakespear Regional Park Xterra isn't really my favourite Xterra of the year. I find I'm slow over the long (10km) of rocky shoreline section. It is fun... but stressful trying to avoid twisting your ankle or slipping over. High levels of concentration required!
So it was with some trepidation that I started the event this year...
I drove out with Brett, Neville and Will. There were threatening clouds and a few spots of rain, but overall it stayed mostly dry.
I started strong on the first 4km of hills, and pulled Will and Neville along to the beach. Then they left me behind. I ran perhaps a bit quicker than normal on the beach, chasing the lads, who moved quickly ahead of me. By the (shortened) turnoff from the beach, Nev had opened up 2 minutes on me, and Will was 1 min ahead. But I caught Will quickly on the first hill, and ran hard to catch Nev. I caught him with about 2km to go, and beat him by 1m in the end :)
I was 1st in 50+. Will not very happy with his run (he walked most of the hills).
I used my saloman xcross shoes. Probably a good decision - easier on my bones than the inov8's. Although the rocks were wet today, I didn't slip much (although a few near misses)
Pauline was there in "Run Like Crazy" team. She was 4th in open Long.
Brett was 5th in Long 50+ (a good effort considering he is 60 in 4 months time), and really enjoyed it.
Met Liam (training for 2 years for GodZone). Met Pattie. (who beat Lynda P). Met Allan and Kiri Bullot. Alysha not there, but they had bought Juliette (very fast).
Had normal 3 gels. Not any much water to wash them down, but that didn't seem to matter.
Legs not sore afterwards, nor any real aftereffects except general tiredness for a few days
I did 1:36:10, which was significantly quicker than previous years - although the course was a bit shortened (took the stairs up off the beach before the bit where you would normally have to swim).
